For the time being, I live only an 8-12hr ferry ride away from my SO. However, this relative geography bliss ends in August when I have to go back to the US for education, and he will most likely be serving conscription. In a recent discussion with my SO, we were talking about how to handle the possibility of not seeing each other for a month because of school. I might have a free weekend before then, but it's not guaranteed. He thinks that I should take as many opportunities as possible to visit him (I'm usually visiting him due to my more lenient class schedule), but I think that we should try to get more used to being apart for longer than a couple weeks. With the anticipation of a LDR becoming Longer Distance, is it better to take every opportunity we can to be together or should we try to get more used to being apart?

Just to be clear, you're asking about BEFORE you go back to the US, right? Personally, I'd want to go see my SO as often as I reasonably could before extending the distance, but that is up to you and your SO. I think I would personally regret not seeing my SO as much as possible when I had the opportunity to.

I agree. Me and my boyfriend have been close distance for six months before going LD and we used to spend every day together. We only separated when I had classes and he worked, but we always made sure we met for lunch. We hardly spent more than a few hours alone. Then we went long distance and we spent almost six months apart before he could visit.
Sure, that was a drastic change and has been quite hard to handle, but I think that all the time we spent together when we were CD only but helped us later on in the relationship. We got to know each other quite a lot and also created few memories that we still treasure nowadays.
I'd suggest you try to meet anytime you can, you'll always have time to get used to a long(er) distance
