Today is the anniversary of our first meeting.

So it was a year ago today I met ML.

We had texted and talked on the phone for two months. At some point I said "I'm headed to San Diego for work. Why don't you join me?"

Imagine my surprise when she said "OK".

We both flew in to the San Diego airport from our respective home locations. She arrived before me an hour or so. I picked up the rental car and parked and met her in the lobby.

I remember looking for her "in front of the restaurant" where she said she was waiting. There were three restaurants. Had a heck of a time finding her. Finally I saw her blonde hair from the back, as she was talking on the phone. I waited until she disconnected, then walked up from behind. She turned, caught my eye, and I said "Hello, I'm John." And then I kissed her.

We spent most of 4 days together there. I marveled in the way she was so warm and outgoing and engaged with people. I hadn't ever been with someone like that before. Our conversation flowed easily. We even had stranger, named Joy, at the next table during dinner at a hole in the wall Chinese place on our third night comment on how we had a "great energy" together. I still have my fortune from that night that says "Your love life will be happy and harmonious", and I still carry it in my wallet.

I think we both flew in there figuring this was a one time fling. But as I walked her to her terminal, she turned to me and said "I'm willing to make this work if you are." Later she confessed her mind was screaming at her What are you doing?.

Since then we have met eight more times. Each time has been an adventure. I knew this was love, when in August, our fourth meeting I believe, we met in Albuquerque, with just the camping gear we could fit in our checked luggage. We rented a car, and drove to a campsite in the National Forest, where neither of us had been before, and cooked and camped and scouted for my upcoming elk hunt for 5 days. Despite being a city girl, she never once complained, or was negative in the least. I've never spent 5 days in the woods, and on the road with anyone, including my hunting partners who didn't get a little bitchy at some point. Both of us agree. OUR favorite (or most memorable/magical moment was driving back to Albuquerque, hot, tired, dirty, hungry. I looked at her and said "We are going to go wade in the Rio Grande." And we did.
