I play the piano and my SO loves when I play for her. I have an electric piano, so the sound that comes out of it is not terrible unless I use a headset (which I always do when I play for myself). So far I have either put my computer next to the piano and played without the headset, so she can hear it over Skype, or I recorded myself and sent her the MP3s (my piano has a USB port and I can record MP3 on a USB key).
Yet, I'm sure there should be a way to connect the piano to my computer in such a way that it can stream the sound directly to Skype.
Here is what I have:
- My piano has 2 ports for headsets (typical 6.55 mm jack plugs), 2 "line out" (R and L/MONO, also 6.55mm), and 2 "line in" (R and L, same);
- My computer (Mac) has a 3.5 mm jack plug for a headset (the headset can include an integrated microphone, in which case the Mac will use it as well), and it has a built-in microphone. It also has 2 USB ports.
There should be a way to do something, probably with an external audio card that I would plug in the USB port of the computer, and on which I would connect the line out of the piano; then some software tricks so that when I play, the sound of my piano gets mixed with the sound coming from a microphone and sent over skype (and also the sound of the piano needs to be sent to my headset, but without the sound of the microphone, so I don't hear my own voice).
I have tried with a very cheap sound card ordered over Amazon and a cheap headset with a mic, but didn't get any result. I think the sound card was already fried, though...
If there is any specialist in audio equipment who could advise me on how to do this, I'm interested!
