Watching Master Chef and I dont really think I would be able to kill a crab for the sake of competition.Because there was this Indian girl, and she really started crying because her religion did not allow to take a life from any animal. So I put myself in her shoes and realized I would never be able to put a moving living thing in boiling water, not even because of religion (if I was Hindu) but just because well,it's wrong.I mean the animal is still alive, right, you cannot just kill it.
No clue why I decided to post it here o_O What about you guys by the way?
I have no particular qualms with killing animals in a quick, efficient manner. I've put crabs in a pot before.
But that's my opinion.
Anyway, there's obviously a different set of standards we apply to pets vs. "food/other animals".
People spend a lot of money, time and effort so that their dog/cat/bunny/chinchilla/whatever feels well, is healthy and not bored. People think it's outrageous if you keep a single guinea pig, because they live in groups naturally and they will be lonely.
Whereas only minimal standards apply for food animals and most people don't chose the meat they buy based on how happy (and interesting!) the pig's/cow's/chicken's/whatever's life was.
I kinda don't like the "How would you feel, if.."-argument either. It really doesn't make a lot of sense it most cases. I would not be very happy eating shit, rotten meat or sniffing strange dogs' asses while my dog seems to love all of that. I like showering and taking bathes - things my dog evidently isn't very fond of. Truth is - I have no idea how a lobster feels getting boiled, but chances that he feels exactly the same I would feel are pretty slim I guess.
TwoThree put it perfectly:
How are crabs "meant to be eaten" anyway? I guess in a way everything is meant to be eaten, but I don't understand how a crab is more meant to be eaten than a dog, cat or pig?
We're talking about a crab for freaking sake! Some people get way too emotional about a crab. People have eaten them for many many years. Do I take pleasure in the fact that the crab is boiled alive? No. But it's not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.
That's just my opinion.
