So I can't stop thinking about Operation Stop-Birth-Control-Let-Nature-Take-It's-Course. Since it's summer and I'm not working, I just sit around half the day, googling things to obsess about before getting pregnant.
In my other blog about this topic, I said why having a baby now would be a good thing.
-My job has awesome hours (it's full-time pay, but I only work 25 hours a week)
-Maternity leave is guaranteed through the govt (14 weeks- 6 before birth and 8 after birth)
-Things are cheaper here (including health care)
Which brings me to my current point of worry: health insurance.
I am currently on a pretty expensive expatriate insurance plan. It has a really high deductible so basically it's just there in case of a major medical emergency. And the main reason my family wanted me to have it is for medical evacuation (if I ever had to be evacuated in a medical plane to a different country for treatment).
Here's the problem: the plan does not cover anything maternity (pre-natal, delivery, post-natal and newborn care).
So if anything were to go really wrong during my pregnancy- I would not be covered for medical evacuation. It also means that if I were to find out early on that my pregnancy was complicated and I decided to go back to the US to have the baby (not planning on this, but you never know)-- I would have zero coverage and pay out of pocket.
So that's my current worry. I feel pretty confident that I can find decent medical care here. There are a few fancy, private clinic (although I don't know the cost of delivering in one of those). I'm sure there are some really good private doctors and midwives if I ask around (I have a few expat acquaintances who have had babies here). But I'm just worried about that what-if aspect of it all, although going back to the US would be last, last, final, last resort. I mean millions of women have their babies here with a lot fewer resources than I and (most of them) make it out okay!
Why does US health insurance suck?
And are there any health insurance geniuses here that can advise me?
