Banff to Waterton
  • We took our time getting ready and leaving banff. We stopped for breakfast and free wifi. We were about half way to Waterton when all of the sudden the radio goes "WEEEOOOO WEEEOOO Attention there is a tornado warning for High river, it is imminent that a tornado should touch down in the next 30 minutes. Find shelter and listen for updates" We had just past High river minutes ago and look out to the right of the car and see this....

...and well me being the fearless one that I am I pulled over and waited for it to touch down. My SO thought I was insane but there were two truckers that had pulled over as well so I figured as long as they were still watching we'd be okay. It swirled and got so close to touching down but eventually puttered out. It was so awesome though. Seeing a tornado is on my to-do list.

Waterton
  • Waterton is a really tiny cute mountain town. When we arrived the weather was nice so we set up and bbq'ed some steak and asparagus. Our campsite was right near the lake it was really nice. We took a walk after dinner and there were deer with babies everywhere! So cute!
  • We were told about an area where there were lots of bears so we got up really early the next day and drove to red rock canyon. Within 5 minutes of being there we saw a black bear. I was so excited my SO finally got to see a bear! After that we went back to bed for a while and it rained so we hung out in a pub and played pool then went for dinner inside somewhere.
  • The next day we took a walk to Berth falls/lake and Cameron falls. (12 kms)

When we got home that evening I needed nap or I needed some down time cause I found the hike quite exhausting. My SO got in his first pout of the trip. Saying he was bored but didn't take any of the suggestions I offered. I told him if he was bored on a sunny evening overlooking a lake and mountains he has issues. I can't be bothered to entertain his boredom anymore. He refused to eat the stew a brought cause that isn't dinner food and whatever I ate anyway. lol
  • Today was the day we'd been looking forward to the whole trip. We were going to crypt lake! (18 kms) You had to take a ferry across the lake to get to the start of the trail. At first everyone from the boat hiked in a long line which was a little funny but slowly everyone spread out nicely. First we came across a 30-40 ft waterfall...then we came across a 50-70 ft one! To get to the lake you had to traverse across a steep cliff and go through a tunnel. I have a video of us doing it I might try to upload at some point. You can see the dark spot is the tunnel, you can also almost make out the 10 foot ladder at the entrance as a size reference.

After the tunnel we were almost to the lake. There was still huge icebergs in the lake, but that didn't stop us from jumping in! No photos from that though, we were naked! My SO managed to get a pic of me putting my undies back on and one where my nips are about an inch long, so we'll just skip those :P It was really nice though, we rewarded ourselves with ribs for dinner that night
  • Last day there is rained all day. It sucked.

Drumheller

I was really excited to go to Drumheller, home of the dinosaurs, grand canyon of the north. I was really excited about the campground pool when we arrived and it was 40 degrees outside. Until I realized I booked the wrong campsite. Uggggh! I was bummed cause the other campground was an rv park and when we checked in the lady said they don't usually book just tents so if they had been on the ball when I called I would have realized that it was the wrong place when I booked.

Anyway I always try to make the most of things. We set up and headed to see the giant Trex and walk up him for a view of the town.

After we went to the Royal Tyrell Museum, full of all the dinosaur bones they have found in the area. FYI chances are any dino bones you see in your local museum came from here! It's a really awesome museum. We came back to the campground after and thats when my SO got his second pout on. He though the town wasn't nice and would rather be in the mountains. (He explained to a friend last night that he always feels like he should be doing the best possible thing and when he isn't he can get in moods) I get it but I told him he needs to understand everything can't be a high or he wouldn't appreciate the awesome things when they come along. He was ready to leave. I managed to pull him out of it. We went and got some food and had a redneck fire. What is a redneck fire you ask....

We made smores and it was nice to finally have a fire!

The next day we went to see the suspension bridge and a ghost town where the saloon was still open. The town used to have 2500 people but now only had 28. We also went to see the hoodoos!
After that it was just too hot to do anything. We went back to the campsite. Set up the sun umbrella a towel and laid dying with a beer in hand until it cooled down. We went to Reptile world later on when the heat died down a little and my SO held his first snake. He wasn't going to but I think he is glad he did. That night we cooked and had another fire.

We decided we'd leave a day early so the next morning we packed up and went back home. The heat was just too hot for us.
