I stayed nearly two months, met his family and friends, and we made plans for the future – plans to make sure that once we ended the distance we would never have to do it again. But we had a year before we would both be out of school – him finishing his tertiary education, and me re-attempting high school.
When I got home, I moved in with a friend to become her maid/nanny while finishing school. We had planned that Obi would come visit me in Australia for Christmas, and when he went back, I’d go home to Canada with him. It would be a long wait. I managed a 20 day surprise visit to Canada in June which broke up the wait and made it easy. Hell, we’d gone more than three months without talking at all, we could do an LDR!
We spent a lot of time on skype. One night he said to me that we probably sleep on skype with each other too often, like it was a bad thing. I said “normal couples get to sleep together every single night.” It was never bought up again, and the only time we slept alone for the rest of that year was nights I spent in the city with my sister. Even when the end of his school year approached and the students in his class slept under their desks instead of going home, he still connected his headset and slept with me, not caring if the other students thought it was strange.

Instead of coming in November, he flew out to visit me two weeks after his schooling ended, instead of starting his career like his classmates had, and he stayed with me four months. Sometimes that was harder than the LDR. My lifestyle was a lot different to what he was used to, and I was having trouble at home. My friend kicked us both out a week before my final exams started, so we spent the rest of his stay effectively homeless, living off my sister’s charity. At the time it was rough, Obi missed his comforts of home and his friends and family, but we have very good memories of it too. He got to know my sister and her bf very well and they embraced him as family. When he returned to Canada, I came too, and I bought my cat with me.
