She's a 2 year old, Mini American Eskimo/Pomeranian and we picked her up on Tuesday from the shelter. Her name's Luna. Behold:

She wasn't spayed so that happened earlier that same Tuesday. Poor puppy was pretty depressed and she wouldn't leave her spay site alone so we wrestled her into an e-collar. And I do mean wrestled. We failed like 15 times because she's a wriggly one. My SO bear hugged her, I snuck it on from behind and then we both zip-tied it down to her collar. It was great. She, predictably, hates this shit...but it sure is funny sometimes. I'm awful, but when she sniffs the ground on walks, the cone tips over, and basically chinese finger traps her head to the floor until she calmly steps backwards. She gets tons of sympathy and attention when we're out with her. Poor pup. She'll be cone-free this Friday.

As far as issues, there aren't too many with her. Luna's had a few pee accidents in our house, but I think there were a lot of contributing factors. Newly spayed, residual anaesthesia and, obviously, we screwed up a couple times. She almost seems embarrassed when it happens. When she took her first post-spay poop, I was all "Yaaay Luna! Good potty! Gooood potty!" hopping around on the grass. I have never been so excited to see a pile of shit. We've tried to be super consistent and she almost goes on command already.

I've done drills with low physical exertion skills, like Sit and Stay and she's a quick study. Once she's all healed up, I can't wait to try getting her to roll over. The whole Bang! You're dead, pooch! trick is definitely on the list. She's gonna need a bandana and I'm going to need a cardboard sheriff's badge and my SO is going to have to film in black and white... I'm going to go full-dog person and I am not ashamed.

American Eskimos are actually not American or related to the Inuit-Yupik culture at all. They're a German breed meant to act as companion dogs and watchdogs. Now that she's attached to us, I see the whole watchdog bit. She's pretty silent, but does the occasional single, warning bark if a stranger makes a loud noise near our apartment. Sometimes she does a low growl/warning bark at a stranger on a walk, but I've figured out how to snap her out of it right before it happens.

Overall, she's a really great dog. Respects the boundaries we set for her and is super outgoing with other dogs and people she meets. She's also made us laugh until we've cried almost every day. It's barely been a week, but we love her to bits and I know we're in for some some good adventures together.
