    Planning on closing the distance!

Hi Everyone, so me and my SO have had a few complicated days. For a few months I had felt like our relationship was going nowhere and I even tried to break up with my SO a few days ago! It hurt me to write a message like that but in the end he had stopped me from doing it. I wanted to do it to give him freedom and for myself so we both didn't have to worry and argue about who was moving where. After a long phonecall he had begged me not to give up with our relationship. I just want to say that I don't want to seem like the bad guy in this scenario, It broke my heart typing the message to him on instant messenger. We both have flaws we need to work on he pointed mine out and I pointed his out over the phone.

Anyways, he messaged whilst I was fast asleep 2 days to tell me he had been thinking about our relationship and he's decided to move over to England. So now we are beginning to sit down and think about the best ways to start the application of his citizenship going!

I would like to mention now that my SO is Canadian and he's planning on living with me in the UK so if there's anyone out there who is in a similar relationship with me then is it okay if I ask some questions about applying for British Citizenship and what is the best route for him to move here?

I'm sorry for the long message, any replies will be really appreciated!!!

    Thanks, Soph

How old is your SO? If he is under 30 then the best route to start out with is a youth mobility scheme visa. It is for two years and it quite simple to get. Then after the two years if you are still together you can apply for an unmarried partner visa, but you have to have lived together for min two years. I don't think you can just apply for citizenship just like that, you have to live there for so long then you have to be granted leave to remain (permanent residency) and then I believe after that you can apply for citizenship.

This tells you a basic of how to go about it, to become a citizen you need to live in the UK for 5 years or 3 years after getting married to a national.
