I have been around there! (not on the base, but been past it numerous times)
I would personally not go to the KFC on Route 11 there by Fort Drum. Both times I went there it was baaaaaaaad. But, it has been two years.
Also, watch out for a great hiding spot for state troopers in Antwerp...
And then 342 is a good 'shortcut' to 81.
If you need any more tips, I might be able to give you some, but I am sure you will get caught up fast.
