Move to San Francisco

Hi everyone.. I live in Indonesia and work as Holiday Consultant. My SO lives in San Francisco. We are thinking abt closing the distance, probably next year. He has stable job but I don't like doing nothing at home. Is it possible for me to find a job in San Francisco?? Because although I hv work experience, I am only high school graduated.

Does anyone have advice for me?

I'll be honest.

The US is in dire economic straits, you have no degree, you have no experience in the US and you aren't a native speaker of English.

It will be very hard for you to find a job without connections.

Thanks for the info. My SO gave me an offer to study first, but it will be another cost for him. I feel bad abt it..

Hi there,

I am a Southeast Asian too, the only difference is that I speak English like a native. I think you should try taking English classes to hone your skills more and get some certifications. I myself am preparing for going CD in a few years by going back to school (I already finished my Bachelor's but it's a Liberal Arts course) and I'm getting a Master's in IT degree so I can have more credentials when I go live with my SO in the US.

Going back to school is the only thing I can suggest right now, and it's not even a guarantee you'll get employed right away.

Just to confirm this: my SO has an engineering degree, and is still having a hard time finding a full-time position in his field. And he has connections. (Granted it's a very small field, but, still.)

I second the "go to school" option, even if it's a small school and you're taking English classes.

He suggest me to get my Bachelor's first then find a job. The major would be up to me. Either I want to continue IT or wanna take another class such as Art.

To go back to school, he wants me to study in his country. I am not so confidence w my english ability. So yeah I think I should take an english course since my grammar is terrible.

I think taking English classes sounds like a great idea.

Have you thought about a visa (what kind you'll apply for)?

I think going to school for anything would be better than hoping to get a job as a HS graduate. It's just impossible.

If your going to spend that kind of money I'd look into a STEM field which IT would fall under. Although, what area are interested in? Management? Programming? etc..?

If you're worried about your English speaking abilities, I wouldn't I just finished my first year towards my Bachelor's and in one of my general education courses, there was a girl whose first language wasn't English. She just spoke when necessary. If you're still worried about it though, I would suggest taking a few English courses at a community college or buying a course you can use online at home first and then taking courses to your Bachelor's! It'll take a bit longer, but it may be better!

i've been talking to my SO and he don't mind if I wanna go to study first to get my Bachelor's. However he believe that I can work for RCI. We don't know yet about what kind of Visa I'm gonna apply. We'll sort it out this Monday. Thanks all for the helpful information
