So exciting, I just got confirmation today of our plans. My SO and I are temporarily closing the distance in 5 months. We're buying a one way for December so I can fly down to him again. I say "temporarily" closing the distance because it's extremely indefinite and relies on me being accepted or not into Uni in his country. Assuming that I do get accepted we'll be CD for at least half a year, in which time we should be able to sort out me getting a work visa and becoming a permanent resident (then we'd be CD forever!!). We're really hoping I get accepted for this term, but if not I'll apply again for spring term. We're super excited. It feels so great being able to purchase a one way ticket after 2 years of waiting!!!

Congratulations. It might actually be cheaper, and look better at border control, if you purchase a round trip. The return date doesn't matter, whenever is cheapest, but it might stop you from getting a lot of intrusive questions. Also, sometimes round trip tickets cost less than one-way, you should look into it.Our separation of each other is an optical illusion of consciousness. ~Albert Einstein

USA and Canada are pretty buddy-buddy, but I'd still look into it. Or maybe buy a fully refundable one way ticket back that you can refund once you get into the country? That's what I do here in CR

They won't hassle you about having a one way ticket if you have your study visa first. My friend got in trouble for having a one way ticket at the border before he had his study visa (which he got at the border the same time as me and we are both from the US) they said what if we were to deny your study visa then you'd have to find a way to get back home (it's not uncommon for them to deny study visa, no matter the country you are from). They were going to yell at me for doing the same, but because my dad worked for the airlines.
If you are applying to start school in September you would of known by now if you got in or not, but if you are applying in September for the Winter semester (starts in january) you won't know until November/early December (When I was going to school in canada, I actually didn't find out until early December that i got accepted into the program i wanted for Winter semester) the reason it takes so long is because they mail you out the letter and they do it regular post, my letter was mailed out on Nov 15th, but it took that long to get because of thanksgiving in the US. Just something to keep in mind

If you have the study visa, a one way flight should be ok (I recommend bringing proof of funds to buy a one way ticket back to Canada). I bought a one way ticket because it ended up being quite a bit cheaper than buying a return ticket (especially when I don't know exactly when ill fly home).
I'm studying in Europe and the lady in immigration didn't even ask to see a return ticket. The study visa was enough for her.

Thanks all that replied. Seems that I'll be buying a roundtrip afterall.
My SO and I actually decided that I'm going to transfer during summer term instead (May 6, 2014).
Processing times for a visa just aren't adding up to me transferring in time enough for winter term.
I was a little bummed out at first but it's 9 months away and I'll still be spending a month with him in December which is thankfully only 4 months away! ^^
