How did you start the planning process?

Okay, so we've been not even 1 week apart since our last meeting, so I may be thinking irrationally here But I was so upset, I am so upset, and the first thing that made me happy again was thinking about our plans to close the distance in 18 months. This has been our goal, for like, the last 18 months. The question is, is it still too early to be thinking about the planning process, or is it one of those things that's never too early? 18 months doesn't seem all that long and I feel like I should be preparing myself now, though that may be because I'm just looking for something to focus on - the next time I'll see him, for instance, because the next time I see him I don't want to have to say goodbye.

<< Of course, as per my profile info, we're not talking two states, or even just two countries, but two continents. I feel like the move has even already started, because I left most of my winter clothes with him. It was like saying, I'll be back for these. It will happen. But am I getting ahead of myself?

I'm looking at getting a Swedish Residence Permit and from what I can tell from their website processing times can vary from 3-14 months. And it's probably a silly question, but I have to ask because I'm sure many of you have been through a similar visa process... but, what happens when you actually obtain the visa or permit? Like, does it come into effect then and there, or is it not effective until you re-enter the country? Example, if I was to start submitting my application in June, approximately 12 months before the move we want to make, but then I get accepted and finalised by like October, what happens? Will that start cutting into the validity time on my permit, or not until I re-enter the country 8 months later? Does anyone have experience with this? Because I'm thinking it's also a matter of booking very expensive international flights over $1000 for a one-way ticket, and generally you can book tickets up to a year in advance, during which you can find cheaper flights. When you put that into perspective, it's more like "hey... I could be booking a one-way flight in 6 months." and that makes it seem that much closer! Of course, the other side of it is the contract for my job ends in June, and have to see if that's extended, and if our savings stay on target. All the little things to factor in... But also the big things. Like flights. Like applications. I mean, it's Sweden, it's a small country I can sort of see it being on the shorter end of the of the processing times, but then again, what if it's not and flights are booked? Do you not book flights until after your application is approved, or do you book a flight and change it if need be?

I'd also loveee to be able to start thinking about how I'll move my stuff, and get quotes and stuff, but it does seem a bit extravagant to start packing things up now. But really, there are things that could be started to be packed away, in a very early preparation. Except, you know, we don't know where we'll be living yet... whether we'll move into our own house or rent, which factors not only into the shipping cost, but when things are shipped. Postage is too expensive to send anything over for him to look after now, and his place is too small to start storing lots even if I did start sending things over. BUT I WANNA KNOW ALL THE ANSWERS!!! I wanna be DOING something, you know?

Anyone have any experiences or advice?

I don't think there's any harm in starting to look at the process. We've had ours planned for a while (years!) But knew we had to wait for me to get a permanent contract before we could apply. Then this got held up by me being ill etc.

You can start collecting evidence: photos, letters, emails, financial etc. Look at the forms you have to fill in, save up the fee.

Then I guess there's practical things like look at the language, declutter and sell things, research jobs.

I don't know how the visas for your country work but for us I have to enter the US within 6 months from my medical exam (which I haven't had yet) or my visa will expire. I've got shipping boxes coming tomorrow as hopefully I'll be moving in 6 months time if all goes well with the paperwork. I've got them booked to be sent out 25th April so should arrive in the US in May. I'm working on packing up the house already. I've done a few charity shop runs last year and I'm working on downsizing, whats going in the boxes and whatever is left is going to have to go in our suitecases or be gotten rid of. I'm on a budget as well.
      Engaged Dec 2015!! Visa approved June 2016 . Married July 18th 2016 <3

80anthea - Glad to know I'm not the only one! I've been trying to learn the language for years, and I've got a lot of the basics down-pat but it's finding the motivation to keep it going which I always struggle with despite the over 20 language learning apps and podcasts and stuff I have all over the place. When living over there I would undertake SFI, Swedish for Immigrants, but until then I'm not sure I can master it by myself! I began selling some of my old stuff last year, but haven't had much luck. Either it's not interesting enough to buy or I'm trying to sell too high, but I figured I had years to wait and sell it for the right price. But noticing how long it's been to try and sell that stuff, I'm certainly going to try harder now and put up more stuff to get rid of and not only declutter, but save a few bucks, so that's definitely a good idea. We will have no problem collecting evidence of photos, letters and emails, plane tickets, but how much is too much? xD How much do they actually need to see? We've only met twice, and he hasn't met my family, and we don't plan to do that until right before the move. Also, I hadn't thought about financial evidence Would that just be like showing individual bank accounts/pay slips/credit card payments/etc, or something that shows combined finances as well? I've helped my SO out a few times financially and sent him some payments through PayPal and stuff, and I suppose little things like that might help or deter it? And thanks for the advice about actually looking at the form! I hadn't even considered that because it asks you to sign up so you can save your application progress etc, and I was thinking yes it's still too early, but nothing stopping me signing up and taking a look!

Ella85 - I don't even know if I require a medical exam! I suppose I might But that's good to know there's a 6 month window. This is what I'm trying to find out for Sweden as I can't seem to find information on it. I wish I could start packing already, but I feel I would just be staring at empty shelves for the next 18 months, and a bunch of boxes I can't yet do anything with! I guess I'll try to declutter and downsize the stuff first, that sounds the more logical, rational, way to do it.

I am still mostly wondering though about when to start applying for the application, and whether to book flights before or after an outcome, both of which I know are questions with very variable answers! *sigh*
