    This is something that probably depends on your company, coverage, state, and many other things. Give your insurance company a call and find out. Have these specific questions for them when you call. You might even be able to find some of it online. Try their website too.

      Hi Hilary,
      My past experience includes HR/benefits management in the states and regarding you and your SO being married, you should talk to your HR or benefits rep at your company. In most plans, marriage is considered a "qualifying event" and depending upon the policy, if you enroll your spouse within the plan specified amount of days after completing the event (usually 30 to 60 days) pre-existing conditions do not effect his enrollment. Issues usually apply if you attempt enrollment after the qualifying event and pre-existing conditions due apply.

      Plus with the new health care laws being put into action, it is making it much more easier for the employees to receive insurance and add dependents onto the plan.

      But first thing first, talk to your HR rep or benefits rep about your policy, they will be able to provide the best answers. Best of luck!!
