i think both the whiskey and newspaper ideas are cool. I'm 26 so I'm not too far removed from my 21st birthday.

Engravings are always special! One thing that my boyfriend really appreciated was an engraved zippo lighter. Not that he's a smoker but he appreciated it because of its fanciness. Plus it had a monogram on it with his initials all in fancy fancy lettering. Its small enough to be in his pocket, and its something that if we're together forever he can be like "Cinders got me this!" or if we break up he can still appreciate it as a "milestone birthday" sort of gift. I don't remember the website as it was aaaaages ago, but theres all sorts of stuff. An engraved flask, picture frame, money clip even? I don't know what his personality fits, but there are a lot of options there...

Anything engraved is always special. For our 3rd anniversary I got my SO two things from Things Remembered and he loved them! Definitely get something he can keep forever. One birthday my aunt and uncle also saved coins from the year I was born and put them in a jar, so that's pretty inexpensive too if you think he'd like it.

My 21st birthday my boyfriend paid for me plan ticket back to singapore. I would not allow him to buy me anything more. I gave him...a visit and one of my giant bolsters for hugging. Did not realise we both got similar 21st birthday gifts until now. /:

Thanks for the responses guys! We've actually decided to wait until we see each other next before we give our presents, which will be around march (becuase our birthdays are like 2 days apart) We're just going to send cards to each other (maybe I'll send him something little too). But It means I have a bit more time to decide what to buy him! I was thinking of actually getting him some Johnny Walker Black label Whiskey because whenever he sees it he points it out, but he's never actually bought or tried any (to my knowledge) (BTW hes in the UK so the legal drinking age is 18). I'll be 21 by March so I'll be able to legally buy it in the US! Woohooo! lol! I think I'm probably going to go with the newspaper too, but I'll have a little bit more of a think about it!

my SO's 21st was in december, i got him a shotglass and a beer mug that were engraved "michael y's bar"
