    Country-related gifts

    Hey y'all,

My SO wants 'the most American thing I can find him for Christmas.' He said it could be anything, so I'm taking that to mean stuff from food to postcards. I'm in need of some help: I'm not entirely sure what to get him! I, on the other hand, asked for anything Dutch. Not sure what he'll come up with.

I will also pose another question: what sort of gifts are representative of your country and why?

American stuff is hard because "American" culture is primarily just a mix of other cultures. I had the same dilemma when choosing gifts to bring with me when I went to visit last year. Eventually I decided on things with peanut butter (Reese's PB cups and a jar of peanut butter) because those aren't sold in his country.

Ever since I landed in America I've been pointing out things that are SO american! Starting at school buses (THE YELLOW SCHOOL BUS!!!), over chocolates (our Milkyway is SO much different!) to the cute little houses and their decorations!
Almost every day I see something that I saw in a movie and I'm like "WOW, It's just like in the movies!!" and then he's like "yeah, because they were made in America..."

I suppose the most representative thing for Austria would be Milka chocolate (and my goodness, is it delicious!!) and probably Dirndl, since that's how people seem to view us :P Living on mountains wearing our fancy dresses and eating chocolate :P
(Also probably a sign saying "No kangaroos in Austria!" lol)

That's right. XP I suppose I could go by the stereotypes, but I don't want to do that.

Those are some good ideas! Thank you snow

I have a shirt that says that in fact XD and I must admit, I believe many Americans do view stereotypical Austrians that way.

Maybe get post cards showing American landmarks, like the Golden Gate Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the national momumment in DC. Maybe something about Baseball or American Football. Hot dogs and apple pie?

Do you mean the Washington Monument?

My first thought was "send him a Cowboy hat." Maybe it's because every non-American who knows that my SO is from Texas asks if he is a cowboy :P.

Gifts that define my country of origin? Anything with a dodo on it. Maybe some of the local music and locally-grown tea. Postcards with wonderful beaches on them. Hand-carved wooden products from the craft markets.

Try to combine it with something he likes already. For example, if he drinks lots of coffee, get him a coffee mug with an American flag or something on it. If he likes to hang around in boxers, get him a pair with a flag print or something similar. Also, lots of little things in a stocking that are themed that way would be cool. Red, white, and blue colors would do well with anything. Good luck.

A stocking to start with wouldn't be a bad idea, to my knowledge stockings in the continental European countries aren't that common

When the pope got elected, I found a screenshot of a news station that had labeled Argentina as a city in Colombia LMAO. I was like "duh hell?"
