Is there any way to talk for free internationally???

Hi there,

My boyfriend is going to be in Norway for 2 weeks. We are trying to figure out how we can communicate with each other without spending a ridiculous amount of money. We are trying to save up to close the distance and can't afford to get a huge phone bill right now.

We have skype on our phones but we don't know whether calling while he is in another country even though his Skype account is from the US will be free or not.

Does anyone have any advice on how to communicate for as little as possible?

In the almost 10 years we've been together, we have never gone more than 2 days without talking... and that has only happened twice. We are going through a rough patch right now with the stress of closing the distance and we are both concerned that not being able to talk to each other will be unbearable.

His best bet is finding a reliable spot for wifi. You can just do regular internet skype and talk for free that way (doesn't matter where you are, as long as you have wireless). If that's not possible, sometimes there will be internet cafes where you can pay to use a computer hooked up to the internet for a while (or just use the internet, if he has a laptop), and you could communicate via email or instant messenger. I don't know if he's staying in a hotel, but they will usually have some sort of internet service as well, though sometimes it's only through a couple "business computers" they have set up that you need to ask permission to use.

If you're both on wifi, Skype to Skype calls are free, regardless of which country you're in. If you have iPhones, you could also try an app called Viber, it's excellent for free phone calls (on wifi). If he can't get access to the internet, you can call him from Skype to his mobile or landline. It's not free, but you pay a lot less than you would pay mobile to mobile.

if you have iPhones, WhatsApp messenger is just like texting-if your SO switches his phone to airplane mode and turns off cellular date and can find a wifi network, you can text on this app just as you normally would on 3G or regular cell service! My bf and I have been doing that (he moved to mexico a week ago, I'm still in Los Angeles) I hope that's helpful! We are also writing one email per day, even if we Skype/text all day... just something that helps keep communication open and consistent!

Thanks everyone! I will try a few of these... he arrived in Norway today and will be there for 2 weeks... I know it may seem silly to be so focused on the distance between us since we have been long distance for 10 years... but even though its still 3,000 miles away (just like it always has been) it feels like he's further away.
