I want to second what Eclaire said about switching meds if you aren't going to take it consistently. That is one benzodiazapine that is not meant for as needed use, where as something like xanax can be taken that way without issue.
The build up and needing more is really something that differs person to person. If you DO develop a tolerance for a med, it may (or may not) take a very long time for it to happen. It's all about your body and how it responds.
You've gotten some great advice so I'll just leave my bit about the meds, and I wish you the best! It's hard. All of it! But do-able. For sure.
