Yesterday, when he left his house to bring out the trash, his mother filled his ashtray with chocolates and pistachios and left him a note to tell him she noticed he had quit smoking and she was so happy and proud of him... I think this type of positive reinforcement is really the best thing to do! He needs to quit for himself... but there are things you can do to make him proud of himself and want to do it for himself.
If he's never expressed the desire to do it, you could ask him casually if he's ever thought of it, and then if he says he doesn't think he can do it, etc. You can try to be as supportive and encouraging as possible... if nothing else, you may plant a little seed in his mind that will grown until eventually he wants to do it!
