    help finding a story

I recently read a short story (I'm not sure if it was fiction or true) somewhere on the internet about a couple in a LDR meeting for the first time.

The general plot was they were meeting at the train station (or maybe airport) and the lady had said she would be wearing a distinctive scarf, but she gave the scarf to an older lady. The guy still went up and spoke to the older lady and then once the younger one had realised he genuinely didn't care what she looked like she revealed herself. It was a lovely story, my synopsis hasn't done it justice but now I can't find it.....does anyone know it?

I've read that story before!!! I think it's in one of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, either one of the Teenage ones or the Love Stories one. I always remembered it because it was so distinctly beautiful.

Hmm, I've never read the story, but am I the only one that finds the premise messed up? Like why does the girl have to "test" him? If I was going to meet someone who I'd been talking to and they had told me they were, say, 20 years old. And then I got to the train station and they were 80 years old, I am not sure I would go talk to them (could be an 80 year old serial killer or something )

            Just googled it

A man and a woman formed a romantic relationship as pen pals. They fell in love and decided to finally meet in person. The woman said, "I will be wearing a red scarf".

When the young man arrived at the meeting place, there she was, in her red scarf, waiting. She was not at all what he had expected. She was much older and much shorter than he had thought she would be. He was terribly disappointed.

He had two choices, he could just leave and she would never know that he had been there, and had rejected her. Or he could introduce himself and then gradually disengage from her without hurting her feelings. But, then he remembered the beauty of her spirit and personality that had given him so much hope and happiness in her letters to him. He forced himself to look past her physical appearance. That did not matter. All that mattered was she loved him. He knew that. And, he loved her.

He went over to her with the rose he had brought and introduced himself. She was gracious and kind. He gathered her into his arms and they embraced tenderly. Her letters, her soul, had meant so much to him throughout terrible times of loss and suffering. When they pulled apart, she had a strange look on her face. And, then, a lovely young woman approached. The older lady removed the red scarf, handed it to the young woman, and left. Here, truly was the lady whom he loved. She had tested his love. And, he had passed in flying colours.

It sounds like a fairytale and while I don't like the underhanded "testing" aspect it just goes to prove that appearances are only skin deep and that its what on the inside that counts.
