    Sequestration - affecting my LDR

So, SO is now officially my Fiance. So hurray! She'd said she wanted to move back here, we'd talked about things, living together, etc. I told her at the time (this was 6 or so weeks ago) that one thing is I don't think you give up a good job and uproot your kids for a move to be with a boyfriend. You do that to be with a spouse. And for various reasons, some back and forth in our past, etc., I also thought that we shouldn't do this without a big commitment. Basically, make the commitment, and stick with it if we do it. and make it legal.

Between then and now, we've talked, I've asked her what she wants to do when she gets back, etc. Ideas/plans were being set up. Ideas were basically to wait until her kids were done with school and out for summer. Then do a move.

So I went searching and found a ring I could afford, ordered it, and setup a plan for what I'll term a romantic gesture to give it to her. Involved a beachfront hotel room getaway, etc. Was very nice. She cried and said yes the instant I popped the question. Then spent a while smearing my lips with whipped cream from the a strawberry platter I'd had set up in the room for when we got there, and then licking it all off. It was quite the moment. Happened this past Saturday.

The following Monday she gets to work. Her company is a government contractor. She finds out that morning that unless there's an Act of Congress and it's signed by the President to prevent this, her company stops work due to lack of funding March 28th. All 150+ of them. I'm currently selling my house, it closes 4/26, but can find a similar place to rent for $600-800 a month less here thanks to the massive swings in housing costs (thank you housing bubble bust). All I could think to ask her was "So do you wanna come back here and find us a new house?"

Not sure what we're gonna do exactly, but I've told her if she has no income suddenly, and we're engaged now anyway, go ahead and move back here, and we'll accelerate plans. I have a stable job that will support us all on 1 income and it's secure for the next 3-4 years due to some long term stormwater engineering contracts we have with some localities here. It's all funded by stormwater utility fees, no tax money, so it's secure. She can go ahead and get moving onto whatever is next for her job/career wise, but we'll be okay.

So I guess the current political impasse in Washington, DC is currently looking like it might lead to a rather abrupt end to my LDR and a looming closing of the distance.

Congrats on the engagement, that sounds great! As for the sequestration, it's doing weird things to people all over the place. Luckily, my SO's government contract is so indirect (goes through a rather large company before getting to him) that his funding wasn't cut. But a LOT of people he works with lost funding or had to change stuff to keep it. It's been kind of crazy, and we've been lucky. It sounds like even though your SO has lost her job, it might be lucky anyway. You guys get to be together, without any looking back because you couldn't change it.

Congrats again and I hope it all works out for you guys!
