The future of long distance relationships? And we think we have it bad!

So someone linked to this on Facebook. Basically they are looking at starting a settlement on Mars in 2023? So, of course, I'm sitting there thinking these people on Mars would probably still end up on the same social media channels, blah blah blah... so it seems likely that in the future relationships would form... but man would that suck to fall in love with someone on a different planet!! (haha funny that my first thought when reading this was about LDRs when there are all sorts of other interesting questions!)
    First met online: June, 2010
First met in person: August, 2011 (See the story of our first visit)
Second visit: December, 2011 (Christmas and New Years together!)
    Third visit together: August, 2012
Fourth visit: December 2012 (Christmas and New Years together!)
Fifth visit: July 2013 (2 weeks here in Canada)
Sixth visit: December 2013 (Christmas and New Years together again and I finally met his mother!)
Next visit: Unknown... for now but coming up ASAP

I read about this a while back! That is funny you think of LDRs. Think of the ticket price to visit someone on Mars!

Hey, imagine if you went on holiday there and met the Martian of your dreams. Now that would be the ultimate LDR - interplanetary and interspecific!

LOL. I can suddenly see the "Miles Apart" button being a few million or however far Mars is from Earth!

I think if someone could afford to move to Mars they'd just pay for their love to move there. Mars is only for those rolling in the billions.

I remember first thinking stuff like this while watching reruns of Futurama. How did Kif and Amy do it? @_@

thanks for the link Vero, I read the whole website pretty much.. It's a very interesting concept.. but with 7-8 MONTHS of travel time to Mars and the fact that it is only 38% gravity.. any people who lived on Mars wouldn't be able to come back to Earth without huge damage to their body (they might even die? who knows) and people from Earth wouldn't be able to stay on Mars very long at all without them starting to be effected by the 38% gravity and eventually altering their body.. Basically they would become a new 'species' of humans on another planet..

oh and it said there is a 7 minute delay in transmission calls between Earth and Mars... would be hell to Skype!

I know right! I couldn't do it! I mean closing the distance would be a one way thing.... no going back! That could be a lot of pressure on a relationship!! "I moved to Mars for you! I allowed gravitational difference alter my my body for you and you never even tell me you love me anymore!!" haha

Seriously though, I would never do a relationship with someone that lives in a difficult to access country, let alone another planet... yet, if this all comes to pass... I get this feeling it would happen...
