i'm soooooo tired so i havent read all the responses. but from what you said about this work and sleep pattern - maybe he is like my SO in that respect.
my boyfriend works pretty much full time, then comes home - talks to me for like 6 hours straight and then goes to bed, but recently he told me it was making him feel crappy so we should cut talking time down, maybe you need to do that too? so that when you do talk you will really miss eachother - fill your days with other activities.
but i think you did the right thing confronting him with how you feel - i'd say wait for him to come to you after you write the email.
