That is great to hear! It makes sense too because LDR couples not only spend more time getting to know each other, but if two people are not fully committed to each other and will break up easily what are the chances they could survive an LDR.. so makes sense that LDR couples would tend to have gotten to know each other more before marrying, therefore they will have more time to actually commit or decide to break it off before marrying.

Although I do love the positive press so to say, I really think assuming people in LDRs "take more time to get to know each other" is really over reaching. That's like saying a couple who has been living together for 5+ years doesn't know each other as well as those who live far apart for 5+ years? I'd assume they know each other just as well, maybe even the CD more than LD. I think it more has to deal with time in a relationship than whether or not it was LD. Maybe people in LDR have longer relationships before getting married because there's lots of obstacles in the way?

I had similar thoughts. I think that this kind of thing would be hard to accurately study. Couples that meet online could have a huge range- from people who live in the same city and were just using an online dating service to people who met online and then date LD for some time period.

Doesn't seem like the most accurate statistic. How did they come to that conclusion without using cross sectional research? It's the cutest thing ever, I hope it's legitimate

And, you guys were right:

Although the study did not determine why relationships that started online were more successful, the reasons may include the strong motivations of online daters, the availability of advance screening and the sheer volume of opportunities online.

ETA: Also note that it is about online dating, not about long distance relationships specifically. People who meet on a dating website but live in the same area are included in this study.
