I'm in the process of learning Swedish too, just like you. What I found helpful was when, during my trip to Sweden last summer, my SO would point out smaller words on objects and such, tell me the meaning in English and help me repeat the word over and over again. He also helped me read and understand Swedish from the newspapers we would find on our days out. After a while, the words and phrases started to catch on subconsciously. I did start doing my learning on other online sites, but it definitely helps to read and speak a little Swedish with your SO so you'd get the hang of it.

I did this actually :-) I watched the entre Frozen movie dubbed to Turkish, as it as the then in-flight movie with Turkish Airlines. No subtitles ;-)Originally posted by SmileyK View PostMy SO's little sisters ewe watching Frozen last night and so of course that sparked a new idea for me I now have the dubbed Swedish version waiting to be watched on my computer with both English and Swedish subtitles. Think I'll try Swedish dubbing and English subtitles first to focus on pronunciation and maybe eventually Swedish subtitles (maybe with the English dub?) when I want to focus more on the spelling. Let it go, let it go, I'll rise like the break of dawn... I guess this'll be a bit of a change for me...I made love to him only twice, she thought and looked at the man laying asleep beside her. And yet still it is as if we have been together forever, as if he has always known my life, my soul, my body, my light, my pain

Like not try to get it correct all the time but focus on her making herself understood in the language

I got a tip of the "Teach yourself "- series. At least the Teach yourself Turkish book /cd looks great. It starts by telling you to turn off the tv, find a good chair and pour a glass of wine... :-) What a nice, informal attitude towards language learning :-)
Would love for SO to teach me some Turkish, but he is hardly a teacher (and Turkish is not his first language, his mother tounge is Arabic). He pics up a bit Norwegian on his job but it is more on a phraze level. I don't want to play the teacher card with him over Skype, there I just want to connect before he goes to sleep. If he comes to Norway for a visit I will try to teach him a bit, though. My mother and my ex has tought immigrants Norwegian, so I can ask them for tips.Last edited by differentcountries; June 11, 2014, 11:48 AM.I made love to him only twice, she thought and looked at the man laying asleep beside her. We watched Frozen last night With the Swedish dub and English subtitles - which of course is when I learn that they're not actual proper word for word English translations of the Swedish dub. :P But oh well. Won't be the last time I watch it in Swedish, was fun! Barely understood a word, but was exciting when I did! And today I've spent the day getting the Swedish soundtrack, writing out the Swedish lyrics + English translation + An English pronunciation guide. I figured the songs were going to be too hard to learn on their own because they're too many words too fast... but I decided if I wrote out the English pronunciation of the words and read from that, it'd just be like learning an English song. But the more I wrote the more I saw repeated words and words that I didn't need English pronunciation for, because the Swedish pronunciation was coming to me straight away. So that's my next task. Learn the songs in Swedish I think the pronunciation guide will help me learn them much quicker, as then I can focus more closely on the correct Swedish spelling (without worrying about how the words sound), and then the English translation (which I already have a general knowledge of from the original lyrics, and from typing them all out today, words and phrases have stuck with me so I get the general gist of what the songs are literally saying). Definitely a fun task!
