I'm unsure of Christmas this year. My SO is in Germany and we are going to be apart this year. Last yr he couldn't afford to get me a gift and we decided to go out and split a nice date instead. I have gotten him a birthday present but I'm unsure about sending him a present overseas. I don't know how much postage is and he has been telling me it'll be cheaper if I get if off the Internet from a website that is based in Germany. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I don't speak a lick or German let alone able to read it. What is average postage for letters or presents? I really want to send him a care package at some point too.

    Anything will be helpful

I paid about $1 to mail a letter to Spain from the USA, so I expect it would cost about the same for Germany. As for packages, I'd say keep it to something you can send in a small package, because it'll keep cost down. A care package in a cushioned mailer envelope, which ended up weighing about 3lbs, cost me $15.

If you look for it, I've got a sneaking suspicion...love actually is all around

No, No, No! You're not allowed to talk about Christmas until Thanksgiving! No carols until then either! I love Christmas I just always get so Christmased out! Happy Birthday Jesus, let's eat some ham, I'm good to go.

Yeah, I can buy presents for the people I love throughout the year andddd I can see them at other times too For me Christmas is mostly about the traditions we have in my family.

We get together, watch my mum go grazy because she's nervous, wanting everything to be done in time Helping my parents clean the house, decorate the Christmas tree (one of my favourite things), putting on a CD with Christmas songs on it and wanting to listen to it until everyone else gets sick of it Light up loaaaads of candles, eat a niiiice Christmas dinner, unwrapping presents in the evening on the 24th (not 25th, that's just not how it's done ) Go to the cemetery to light up candles for the ones we've lost and it's sooooooo so beautiful.. with all the candles in the dark. We all (I've got 2 sisters) stay at my parents for the night and eat some Christmas food again on the next day

I could go on.. I just love the atmosphere.. there's nothing like it ♥

Sam you are quoting my SO almost verbatim! Which makes me laugh, I will say that I agree with Elina, for me its about the traditions of MY family. I didn't enjoy Christmas as a child at all. My parents were so stressed out with the expense, and my siblings would fight and argue over every present. When all I wanted was the wonder of Santa, and to curl up with my mother and cuddle and be close.

Sooooo when I had my own family, I created my own traditions, baking cookies together, watching 'Scrooged' on dvd together, spending the entire day in pajama's together, and one surprise present from Santa (they write a letter), who we track via the news or weather channel, while spending the evening running back and forth to the window to 'watch' for him. Once my son (21) out grew the Santa stuff, he still enjoyed the traditions, and watching him take pleasure in his sister's (6) wide eyed wonder and enjoyment of the traditions, is what its all about.

Yes I could do these things any other time of the year, and we do variations of them a lot, but just saving them for this one time of year, makes them special, and teaches my children to step outside the consumer driven frenzy and enjoy the spirit of the holiday with me as I am not stressed.

Everything I know, and anywhere I go, It gets hard but it won't take away my love,
And when the last one falls, when it's all said and done, It gets hard but it won't take away my love

Oh and YAY!! My present IS my SO who arrives on the 22nd for 18 days! I've sworn that he can hibernate in our bedroom and watch telly or read or whatever he likes, from the morning of the 24th until boxing day and he can be as grumpy as he wants the entire time so long as he is naked (well there has to be something in it for me!) every second he's closed up in our room.

Oooh, I forgot the cookie baking! Although we do that a few days before Christmas to save the energy and stress I basically never bake.. which is a shame really.. I'm kinda lazy when it comes to that but baking Christmas cookies is fun! And the dough is good

This thread cracks me up. It's not even Halloween yet people!

But you guys got me all excited anyways. This year could possibly be the best christmas ever since I am going to see my SO. Downside, it's in West Africa (and it's 98% Muslim) so the Christmasy traditions will be few. No snow, no cookie-baking, no wrapping paper, no Christmas music, no warm drinks, buuuuuttttt NO complaining from me!
My SO has already told me he's going to try his best to find us some sort of tree for our apartment!

Wait, maybe Sam and LMH should move down to West Africa--NO commercialism and almost NO Christmas!!
