I was in the same boat as you, but when I really took into though what I could get him based off of our random convos i got a whole list of ideas! like a movie, sports team pennant, and even fake dog poop.. lol

If he has a favorite color make him a package with a bunch of things that are of that color. Lets say he loves the color blue. You could get him a blue shirt, blue soda, blue cheese :P, blue stuffed animal, blue shower gel, blue tooth brush, blue cup... etc etc etc!
Its a bunch of random crap but it worked for me with his birthday when i had no clue what to get him. :P
