Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, pride be damned. If it hurts his feelings, remind him you're doing it because you love him, not to embarrass or hurt him. You're doing what you think is best and what you can do within your limitations not only long distance, but in such a situation. At the very least you have to appreciate someone who will kick your butt sometimes out of love (I mean figuratively, physical abuse isn't cute) than someone who throws their hands in the air, says "forget this" and leaves. There is still a limit on what's fixable and what isn't, but I do believe this is the former.
