Giving Gifts to Your SO's Family

Oh my gosh, I need to turn my computer off and go to bed...but anyway...

I think it might be nice to send his family something for Christmas, too. I thought that an ornament would be a good idea (small, can be enjoyed by all of them, I can make it to save money, and it's thoughtful without starting a trend for excess in gift-giving). Do you think it is a good idea to give them something/ do you like the ornament idea? Do you ever give your SO's family gifts (if you celebrate gift-giving events or holidays)?

...and my next question is: have any of you ever made a kusudama and do you have any tips? I think something like this https://paperunlimited.wordpress.com/2007/02/28/ would make a really pretty and fairly inexpensive gift (I'd likely sew or glue in a bead in the centre of each flower and use blue paper and silver glitter to make it more seasonal), but I worry that they might be very difficult (the one at the bottom of the page was my favourite).

Last year I made a bunch of Christmas cookies and sent them to my SO, which I believe his family enjoyed as well. This year, he is coming to see me for Christmas so I probably will not ship anything. I would just feel a bit uncomfortable getting his family something for Christmas, since I do not know them well at all and his mom seems to disapprove of our relationship.

The kusudama is beautiful! It looks like the sort of thing that is difficult, but once you master it you should be able to do it quite easily. Go for it!

Ooh that's a good idea! I've thought about doing this, and most likely will! I like the idea you mentioned of something small. It's like you're appreciating them but it's just a little thing from you

I do origami for a hobby It can be very tricky and depending on the kusudama. The one you have chosen is simply for folding but complicated for assembly. It's 60 sheets of little paper, 5 sheets per flower, and lots and LOTS of gluing! I've made that kusudama a few times, and it's time consuming! I'll see if I can take a pic of the one I've made (Christmas themed). Let me know if you have any questions PM too, if you'd like.

i"m making my "inlaws" a gift basket full of homemade truffles and goodies, plus a toy for his youngest sister. They love my cooking, so i thought it would be nice

Long story short, my SO's grandparents (who he lives with) drove me all the way back to the boarder because the bus line that was to return me home cancelled that route. In short a 6 and a half hour drive to the boarder... So I am most definitely getting them something, I think I will make some holiday brownies, and goodies then send a puzzle for his grandpa and some pj's for his grandma

the ornaments would be a great idea! i have only been with my SO for almost 7 months now so havn't been with him for christmas yet.. but i sent his mom flowers for this past mothers day.. and she really loved them, and they sat on the dining room table for a long time

I wanted to give gifts to my SOs family, because in my family everyone gives gifts to EVERYONE, but he says it would be a little weird and he doesn't even see why I want to. :P I don't get it, but he says his family barely does anything for Christmas, which I think is stupid, because in my family every holiday is a huge deal. I was thinking of just making some cookies then, because I would really like to finally gain their approval.

I always bring german candy, because I know that they LOVE it and I also know that they wouldn't want me to spend a lot of money on present. So, it's alwys candy that I bring. And this time for Christmas (since my SO will be here) I will make them something sorta like goodie-bag with lots of sweet stuff and great candy from here. I am sure they will love it

I send cards, because I always put heaps of effort into my cards, but I only buy gifts for my SO's family if we're giving it together.

Last year I probably outdid myself with the presents, I bought his littlest sister a sleeping beauty princess nightgown (her birthday was also during my visit so naturally I got her a separate gift for that), I got his grandfather a san diego mug, I got his grandmother a thermostat that matched her decor, and I got his two older stepsisters a gift also. This year I'm just making due with sending cookies...lol

I bought some candy (chocolate covered cranberries) for his family, small, but something they definitely can't get in Mexico! hopefully they love them as much as I do!!

I always give my SO's parents and brother&sister xmas gifts. Last year my SO was visiting me so we sent them a big package with loads of gifts from both of us (chocolates, bath stuff, perfume, biscuits etc), and this year I'm visiting them so for his parents I got them a DVD that my family and I watch EVERY christmas (national lampoons xmas vacation :P), and also a tin of 'marks and spencer' biscuits, but the tin is really old school in the shape of a tram with the old 'marks and spencer' script on the top...it's really cool, and i know his mum likes tins like that coz she has heaps in her cupboards that she keeps to put things in I only spent about £8 on his parents but the gifts look more expensive than that.
For his brother i got him a chocolate orange and a set of FCUK body spray things and for his sister a chocolate orange and some 'hangover pampering' items from Whittards lol, theyre really great to give as small inexpensive gifts because every girl loves them! theyre amazing haha! I spent about £5 each on his brother&sister..which i think is enough...after all, it's the thought that counts

This is only our second Christmas together but I always send all his family Christmas cards. Last year I got his neice some Dora pjs and a couple toys, since she is obsessed with Dora! I wanted to send more, but he told me to just save my money, he had got everybody plenty of things and he was just going to put my name on the tag, so they'd know it was from both of us. This year, I sent them all cards and I'm sending something for the kids and I'm going to send cookies and probably get something small, but thoughtful, like an ornament, for his parents.

Aww how cute! I wanted to get her more but I didn't have much money :/ lol. Has his family ever made an issue about it?
