My SO works as an engineer for a company in Toledo, and recently they got a job in Mexico. He ASSURED me he wouldn't be going as it wasn't in his field- I was worried when he told me, as there is a high instance of kid-nappings for businessmen out there. I know my ex-roommate's dad (also an engineer) has a body guard at all times when he goes there....

Well he just emailed me and said that his boss is wanting to send him out there on Saturday through till the following Sunday He said he's told them he really didn't want to go, but it was their final decision in the end. I don't know how to react. I feel sick with worry and dread. It's bad enough he's driving in Ice Storms to get to work let alone go somewhere so dangerous- the way he'd been talking about it, they were going to a pretty nasty area, and the bosses of his company didn't understand everyone's negative reaction to them taking on the job.

god I feel sick. I just have to sit and hope they don't send him The boy sure knows how to make me worry, and I can't even talk to him for another 4-5 hours

he says they are making a final decision sometime today... and it sounds like he'd just be "an extra pair of hands" so if they do send him, they are putting him at risk for no reason

Unfortunately big companies (I'm assuming he works for one) care more about the number of 0s on their paychecks than they do employees' health sometimes. I'm sorry you're both going through this. Hopefully the trip will go alright and nothing bad will happen, there's always a chance the media's overhyped those stories.

Where is he going? My SO is a Mexican national from one of the poorest states. He nor anyone I know have ever been at risk or in danger.

they were supposed to be going to Mexico City, which is bad. But now they are going to Monterrey? He says it's not so bad there. The reason I worry, as it's well-known for engineers to get taken... I guess the companies just pay them for their workers back, so it's a very common occurrence...

He says they are having security though, which makes me feel a bit better. But I am still going to be worrying... no contact for that amount of time...

Thank you guys for your support... I had a rough night of it. He came on skype and tried to explain it to me. All I could do was sit there... sat in silence for about 20 minutes and told him I wanted to go to bed. Our evening calls normally last 1-2 hours, not 20 minutes. I just couldn't think of anything to say. I still don't. I didn't sleep much at all. I can't even tell what I'm feeling. I'd have even preferred him going on the Hong Kong job his company then this, it was longer hours, but I'd know he was safe....

yea, further north you go the more dangerous it gets. i understand what you are going through. My boyfriend works in a town in the midst of land conflicts, which are often violent. Although he is in no direct violence he faces, sometimes there are road blocks, and random murders that do occur. I definitely understand how stressful it is. All you can really do is hope for the best. I know in Mexico City, they do just kidnap people for money, which is nice that his company can afford to pay for them to return safely if that does occur. Try to keep busy, that is all you can do, lucky he wont be there for an extended period of time. Definitely sending him lots of prayers! Try to stay strong, and if you want to talk or vent, feel free to contact me! why can't you guys talk while he is in mexico?!

he doesn't have a laptop anymore, I think he might be able to send me a facebook message every so often from someone else's, but that's it I will talk to him tonight, or at least I hope I have the energy too. I feel so drained. I want to be supportive, I really do, but I can't stop crying at the moment. I wish I was stronger.
