I think the only times when those horror stories happen is when one or both of you weren't completely honest & yourselves and then obviously the person isn't who you thought they were...otherwise there shouldn't be any reason for your insecurities, but I know - we also met online and I was very nervous before we actually met for real after being together for close to two years, but that mostly stemmed from my low self esteem
