Will you be given a 6 month visa regardless of your return date? I'm not sure how it works from USA-Scotland but when my SO came in from Costa Rica he automatically gets stamped for 6 months. But in order to not raise suspicion at the border, his return ticket was for 1 month after he arrived. So what he did was come in February, had a return ticket for March, and just changed that once he got in country. Would that work with yours?
Also I know for coming into the USA, if you come on a tourist visa then you have to stay out of the country for at least the same amount of time you were in it (to not raise suspicion). So if you stayed in Scotland for 6 months, you might have to stay OUT of Scotland for 6 months. So perhaps a shorter trip would be more frugal and make it a shorter time to close the distance.
