I fly out of Boston to London. His trips here at various times of year cost between $850-$1200 from that side. However if I purchase it from this side I can save sometimes up to 200 dollars. I have used https://www.farecompare.com to fully educate myself on how and when to buy tickets.
I have done the research and you are correct you need a round trip ticket. Unless you are planning on waiting until you actually HAVE your permanent visa, other wise you are considered high risk to stay illegally.
My cost to immigrate there with my daughter is 15K, that is why we are looking into his coming this way. We were told by a barrister that I have to have proof of one years median income as well as full coverage insurance which is different than travel insurance. Visa's and legal expenses are going to be 3000 of that. Purchasing an open ended round trip ticket is VASTLY more expensive than a regular ticket and you cannot purchase it on a bargain website. You can however find the cheapest ticket cost and then go directly to that airline and purchase to save as much money as possible. The only other option is to purchase from an airline that you know has cheap ticket change fees and change the date of departure a few times.
I do think the advice here is good.. being a single woman with no dependents who is healthy.. you should be able to lower your estimates to almost half. Even if you enroll yourself in or audit a german language class at some local college.. you should be able to save money on your expenses.
Good Luck!
