I can sing you a song about this...

It has been the same with the parents of my SO, they were distrustful of me, as I was pretty much living on the other end of this planet...

This didn't change much until I scratched every penny I had together to visit my SO and her parents at their place.

I got to know them and they got to know me a bit more, making them somewhat more supportive about the matter... seeing that their daughter means enough to me to cross the world...

Maybe the same could work for your case... try to order things around, offer him to get to know your SO first before boxing him up with the bad guys.

I´m not sure if this would help much, but I know that my parents were a lot more willing to trust Miguel once I had introduced them, and proved he was a real person (lol). I brought them when I was webcamming with him one day, and just had them talk for a little bit. Just the fact that he was willing to talk to them and get to know them as well went a long way.
And if it is possible, having him come to visit first would help so much. My parents were very hesitant to let me visit him alone before they had met him, not because they thought he was some horrible person, but just because they are parents, and they wanted to be able to approve of him first.
His parents also were a little bit "iffy" about me as well until we actually met and hung out a bit.
They just want what´s best for you. So somehow, you need to find a way to show them that he really is Anyways, what I really came on here to do was to send you some love and luck. I hope everything works out for you!

I'm 10 years older than you, OP, so it was easier for me and V's parents to accept our relationship, but even being in our late 20's it took them some months to accept it. I think both sets of parents wanted to see us spending time together in person before they'd lend any real credence to our relationship. Older people have a lot of trouble accepting relationships that originated online, despite the fact that the internet has been a mainstream communication tool for going on 20 years. To our parents, it's still new and a little scary. It might be best in your particular case to see if Chris can visit you first. It's not cheap, so maybe you two can save the money together and work together to come up with airfare and travel expenses, split it 50/50 if he's not able to come up with all of it himself.... I personally wouldn't push the issue with your dad right now. He hasn't forbade you from having the relationship at all, he's just said he doesn't approve and doesn't want to hear you talking about it. Just carry on as you were with your SO, and try to make plans with him to meet up anyway. You may live at home but you're still an adult, and your dad can't really stop you from having a relationship. You guys may have to wait to meet up, but it's worth the wait if it's true love.

Edited to add: V's dad had a very harsh talk with him about how he didn't think our relationship would ever work because of the distance and cultural differences (there are some between Russia and the US but nothing so dramatic to cause us any problems, we're always able to talk about them and we don't notice them in our relationship), and now that he's met me and has gotten to know me in person he adores me. My parents haven't gotten to meet V in person yet, but they've "met" him several times on Skype and have gotten to know him better too, and they love him mostly because he treats me right and he's a stable and responsible guy, and they see us being happy. My parents didn't butt in too much, but my sister enlightened me to how my mom was so super skeptical about our relationship in the beginning and thought it was "weird." Now she's looking forward to us getting married and him being her son-in-law!

Then maybe they could get to know him and understand why you want to be with him I understand you are an adult but if my kid ever wanted to go out of the country especially to meet some guy I would want to go with them.

Think of how it sounds to them. Here is how they see it :

" My child who I love and raised all these years wants to go meet some guy she has only met online, she knows nothing about him for all we know he could be a serial killer. I don't want my little girl getting hurt. what if he ditches her and she can't get back? what if she gets lost or seriously hurt. "

And that is how they see this. As most parents would no matter what your age is.

If you offer to have them come with you I'm sure they would feel more comfortable with you going to see him.
I'd really love to do this, but there's no way on earth my parents would go to America. One, they don't like flying. Two, they don't have passports. Three, they don't like boats. And four, they've no desire to go there.

I appreciate all the help and advice you guys have offered me. I agree with you Moon, it will be at least 3 years before we can meet, so for now I'm just gonna save. My SO is too. He's gonna have to come to me, his parents are much less critical in this aspect, so it should be a lot easier for him to come see me.

I deal with a similar issue. I don't know your father, but it's almost impossible to explain something as important as this to your parents unless they're open to the idea to begin with.

So if you've tried talking to him a few times and the situation is not improving, then I wouldn't waste my breath. He has to get over it, and you have to be happy despite knowing he feels the way he does. (I'm still trying to figure out how to do this!)
