Visa's?

Hi,
im new to the whole international LDR with only 4 1/2 months under my belt haha and i was wondering if anyone would know a suitabe visa for my boyfriend when he comes over? okay, so the facts... he will be 18 when he comes, just graduated high school, lives in australia and is coming to canada, and he is planning to work for about 2 years (labour, commercial etc) before attending university here, he is also looking to get a dual citizenship sometime in the future i have been looking at the working holiday and then switching to the student visa with working allowed. If anyone could give me some insight i would really appreciate it!

The Working Holiday Visa is pretty easy to get (my sister of all people got one )

There are a lot of financial requirements that your boyfriend would need to satisfy to get the student visa, including having the money for tuition fees and proof of living expenses.

When I read about your SO wanting to study in Canada I did wonder if he would have the finances to be able to cover all that... I'm not sure if it's true for Canada but in Australia the tuition fees are much higher for international students, I also believe that you can't have "fee help" when an international student.

Like I said, I'm not sure if that's true for Canada as well.. You'll have to look into it . When me and my SO were looking into visas for him to move to Aus we found a few expat forums for people who had moved here.. there were always visa help sections, maybe you could look for forums dedicated to visas/moving to Canada?

I know it's a bit different for me being an American, but I went to school up in Canada for 4 years here are a few things to keep in mind for him.

1. Tuition for international students isn't cheap, when i was in school a Canadian would pay $3,000 for 2 semesters while i'd pay $11,000 for the same 2 semesters and if you go to a big university/school it's a lot more the UofT (university of Toronto) for example a Canadian would pay $20,000 for 2 semesters but for me I would of had to pay $45,000 for the same 2 semesters. Also it's really increased a lot since then at the school i went to Canadian's still pay $3,000 for 2 semesters, but now international students pay $15,000 for 2 semesters.

2. If he can get the Working Holiday Visa i recommend it, until he can get a study visa. The only thing with the study visa is he won't be able to apply for a work visa until he's been a full time student for 6 consecutive months and his GPA has to be a 2.75 or higher, but even with the work visa he can get while studying, he can only work part time (less then 32 or 35 hours) a week as he has to continue to study while working.

3. With a study visa, you have to show you have enough money to support yourself for 2 semesters (you have to have a statement from your bank showing you have the money in there when i was studying it was you had to have $10,000 or more) or if your parents are supporting you (you have to have a letter written and signed by your parents saying they are your guarantor and will support you the whole time you are studying in Canada and attached with that a statement from their bank showing they have more then enough money to support you during your studies).

I would definitely recommend a working visa My sister-in-law originally moved to Canada on a working visa (she was from Tasmania), and she ended up moving successfully and was able to get permanent residency afterwards.

Good luck! I know how hard distance is - I've got 3 1/2 years of LDR experience under my belt (granted, he's on the same continent as me, but international borders always make things complicated). Wish you guys all the best
