Are you learning/did you learn a new language?

I am learning Tagalog for when I move to the Philippines in May. For a native English speaker it's definitely a little harder to learn than Spanish though it has heavy Spanish and English influence. It just sounds so strange coming out of my mouth haha. For example, at first when I practiced asking questions in Filipino they always sounded like statements. Anyway, after a few months and daily practice with her I've gotten pretty good. I should be conversational by the time I get there. It's such a dynamic and beautiful language and I am proud to be learning it.

I'm learning both German and Norwegian. German because my s/o and I will be vacationing around there for a couple weeks (and for fun!) and Norwegian because he's from there and I'll be honest, it's going to be a long road with learning it! I've been picking up reading and writing, but speaking and understanding it are a different matter! I'm using duolingo to learn, it's free and it's a great tool!

I'm learning hungarian. Or trying but it's been frustrating. Even more so since I moving in with him soon to a country where hungarian is not the official language. But it's his mother language and he's learning spanish for me.

I'm just curious to see how many other people have been taking another language in preparation of visiting/immigrating to your S/Os country.

While my S/O is rather fluent in English, and most people in Norway have a good grasp of it as well, I've decided to learn anyway because people in Norway sort of expect you to know how to speak Norwegian. This ends up with incredibly awkward moments, especially at the cash registers at the stores. Also, I don't want my S/O to forever be my translator. Perhaps the toughest thing about learning Norwegian is that some words are interchangeable in most cases, but not all cases. And, some words sound similar but have totally different meanings.

So, what about the rest of you? Did you learn/are you learning a new language? If so, what are the hardest parts about learning it?

My boyfriend is from Norway as well, and I started learning Norwegian in September at my university. I think you can call it preparing in a way, because it's true. I agree with you, Norwegians are really good at English (I was in Norway from 23 Oct till 1 Nov) but I don't want him to be my translator all the time either. I love learning languages, so I don't really find Norwegian that difficult so far but maybe because it's just the beginning The hardest part for me about learning a new languag is always a vocabulary... I just can't remember certain words sometimes xD but if we practice a lot in class then I have no problem with remembering at all. It's just that I find it boring to sit down and memorise let's say 50 words every other day.

That is what I like about language websites...they are not boring, even if you learn vocab and grammar. I am learning Turkish from Babbel.com and enjoy it very much. I will soon switch to Duolingo because I am on the last Turkish course at Babbel.

Don't get discouraged! German is a really difficult language and I've been fortunate enough to grow up learning it or else I would have probably never tried learning it with all it's rules and exceptions to rules :P

Hey I also took a course and found duolingo helps! I teach English here so a lot of my students actually teach me some German words in the process. Also, hearing them speaking during the class REALLY helps me to understand more. As for speaking, I do a Sprachtandem...so I talk to someone who speaks German for like 1 hour. I've been lazy lately though, but plan on getting back into it next week!

I tried Duolingo and it seems like a beginner's start, still not really something you can fully rely on. I will try out Duolingo a bit, I have learned some things I did not know, even about grammar and their reward system is cute. I guess I will use Duolingo and Babbel together for a while.

Yeah, I agree. I couldn't rely on Duolingo only. I liked the noises it made though!! lol... I also use a visual dictionary. I'm a visual person so it helps me to see pictures to associate the new words

I have just started learning Turkish. He gave me a Turkish dictionary as a gift and I also study using Babbel. Slow progress

I wanted to learn German, so I signed up on a language exchange/pen pal website to find a German speaker to help me, and that is how I actually met him So now I have my own personal teacher...although he sometimes throws some Swiss German in there just to confuse me! I have also used Babbel and Duolingo. I am slowly getting there with it... I am enjoying learning it.
