Are you learning/did you learn a new language?

I'm learning German too, using Duolingo almost exclusively. I ask my SO for help in understanding rules, and I'm am planning to watch German movies or tv shows with English subtitles, and possibly to read a simple book in German.

Arabic! Wooo, it's quite difficult attempting to pronounce the words sometimes. Learning slowly but surely.

I live in Germany and she lives in South Korea and I'm learning Korean now. I was learning Korean last since summer (that's how we got to know each other) and since we are in a relationship I'm much more motivated of course

She is from Mexico and I even took Spanish class for her. Well i was already wanting to learn spanish and She was a good reason for me to start. Mucho Gusto

At least I can more or less pronounce Finnish rr sound. Accomplishment :3

Digging up an old thread. I am learning French at the moment (just for my own interest, nothing to do with SO), I did it for six years in high school and was always fairly good at it but I haven't spoken it for years now.

I have duolingo, memrise and a few old textbooks. Also trying immersion as much as possible by watching/reading the news in French and watching youtube French shows. I would love to be fluent in a second language, I wish I'd kept it up after school really.

I've been learning Bengali (also called Bangla) it is a language spoken in Bangladesh, my heart, Badrul's country as well as in some parts of India. Bangla can be a little confusing... because many words that sound similar to an English word, have a completely different meaning. Its also confusing that there are many dialects of Bangla For instance, the word hash in Bangla means duck, momma means uncle (mother's brother ), and mass means fish, so it can get a little confusing. However, the language is so warm and beautiful, and I'm happy to learn it so I can speak to Badrul's mother, as well as translate when Badrul's family speaks to my family. Its hard to find books to learn Bangla, but I have found a few good books and phone apps . In addition I have an English/Bangla dictionary... but as my reading skills in Bangla are nonexistant... its better for me to use a resource where I can figure out how to actually pronounce a word, since although I can speak Bangla decently... I cannot yet read it.

I forgot to add, that the more you are immersed in the language the more you will learn or remember what you have learned. You will also pick up cultural cues quickly, do your research on the language or culture of where your love lives, and you will remember it once you put it into practice. I was worried I wouldn't be able to speak Bangla, but I quickly picked it up when I was in Bangladesh from constantly being around my heart, Badrul's, family.

My boyfriend is from Sout Korea and he is learning german (he can speak already very fluently) but I am having a hard fight with learning korean.

Keep your chin up and keep trying it sounds like you are doing great in learning so far and will continue to do so, and remember, you almost always know more of a language than you think you do.

I've been studying Japanese for 6+ years now and I'm pretty fluent, so I already knew the language before we met (which is good because else we wouldn't be able to communicate). However, I try even harder since I met him, to be able to communicate even better. He promised me to learn German, but it's not going weel so far. I understand though, he's very busy with work.

I wish I wasn't so lazy when it came to learning how to write in Polish.. I can speak it fine, but for the live of me, I can't make sense of which letters to use for which sounds.. I should have payed more attention when my mom tried to teach me :/

I know the feeling (slightly). I wish I'd learnt Italian from my dad when I was young, but now I have finally picked it up I mispronounce quite a lot and have no chance of doing my Rs as they should sound.


I'm also learning Mandarin Chinese in the hope of one day speaking a little to her parents. Her dad currently has better English than I do Mandarin and he can only say a few random words!

Yes, here! I started taking German right after we started talking more seriously. I practice every day and he teaches me things here and there. It's great because he speaks pretty good English but the "broken" dialect is so endearing. There are more issues when he misunderstands a word I've used or doesn't know how to interpret the meaning. As a bonus, he likes my broken German too
