    Yes, here! I started taking German right after we started talking more seriously. I practice every day and he teaches me things here and there. It's great because he speaks pretty good English but the "broken" dialect is so endearing. There are more issues when he misunderstands a word I've used or doesn't know how to interpret the meaning. As a bonus, he likes my broken German too

      Guten Tag! Good luck with your German It's good though that you can always explain yourself in English when it comes to misunderstandings (I assume his English must be good enough ) I always struggle when I can't express myself well, because I don't have another language to "fall back on", since my SO only knows one language.

        Having at least a small understanding of his native language is going to be more helpful as I become more fluent, which I am working on.
        Learning German is just fun, so it works out good for me.
        I'm assuming you and your SO only communicate in English, which I can only imagine how tough that can be sometimes just from watching my SO struggle with the differences in how words are used, not necessarily just their meaning. I don't know how different your SO's English is from American English due to culture differences primarily. Fascinating all the same.

        My SO is doing better and better all the time with English. He misunderstands the proper meaning of things in context more than not understanding a word or phrase, but this happens also sometimes. That is where I am trying to fill in the gaps with learning German. I also know that after a while, English hurts his brain. I can certainly understand that and can only imagine how weird it must be to communicate abstract thoughts and feelings in a language that is not one's own.

        I admire him for this though.
        And you, too! It takes a lot of dedication to bridge not only so many miles, but the languages sometimes too.

          That's sweet, learning languages should be fun! And it's nice to be able to help each other improve!
          I wish it was English we were using. I use English everyday, so it comes quite naturally to me.
          We're using Japanese, which is really tiring for me at times.
          I understand most of it and speak fairly well, but it's just damn difficult... xD
          We sometimes video call when I come home and my head is ringing
          from work, then talking in Japanese is a real challenge.
          I'm sure your SO also appreciates your effort to learn his language!

              Today I tried one of the really difficult Finnish tongue twisters and recorded it.
              My SO praised me and said I was spot on. Yay. I am so glad I can pronounce it well, but the language itself scares me. Like sure I can read what's written but how am I supposed to remember those difficult weird looking words? Grammar scares me a lot too.
              I want to learn it so much though, I'd want it even if SO weren't in my life. Such a beautiful language~

                One site I've recently found to be really useful is Duolingo. It actually has you recite phrases in the language, and it'll keep you going back every day to strengthen your skills!

                  I am french and learning english! I have poor vocabulary and I am not aware of must of english idioms but I really want to improve myself! That's why I came on this forum, to read, to talk, to learn new things!

                    I didn't learn per-se, but I definitely 150% improved my Spanish. My SO is currently learning English and is at about intermediate level.

                    Relationships are the best way to learn a new language!

                      I've been using this too. I used to know Spanish pretty well but I've lost most of it. I'm not telling SO i'm doinng it - I'll just surprise him.
