I'm actually planning to surprise my SO as well like R&R, by learning Dutch - he knows I'm memorising the odd bits he's already taught me, but not how much else I've been trying to learn. He was already fluent in English before we met (if I didn't know English wasn't his first language, I wouldn't be able to tell) so there's never been any issues communicating, but I would like to be able to communicate with his family more when we do meet, specifically his nieces and nephews who are currently too young to learn English.

My boyfriend speaks fluent English and self taught himself through video games, movies, music, etc. starting at a very early age. I however, don't know any Portuguese at all. I want to learn the language hopefully become fluent as well. I've downloaded some apps to help me learn but so far I haven't been practicing a lot because I've been busy with school work. I'm currently in my fourth year of learning Spanish which is where my time goes when practicing languages. Often times I get mixed between the two because they have many similarities. I think maybe it'll be best if I wait and learn one language at a time. I'll finish Spanish this year in school then I'll be able to fully focus on Portuguese.

I get to know my boyfriend in english and it is still the language we communicate with each other. He learned german at school for quite a bit but that´s long a go and hasn´t been a pleasant experience for him. But he´s working on it My Italian isn´t really better either, I can understand a bit, reading is even better but talking is still a mess. I cannot really express my thoughts or feelings and built a profound sentence. I´ll start another language course in October and hope to improve my Italian. To all language learners out there: you ever tried a MOOC (Massive open online course)? I made one in June (Italian for beginners) and I really liked it.

I'm planning on starting to learn French for when I'm going to close the distance with my SO who lives in Quebec! I wasn't very good at languages in school apart for English..
Does anyone have any tips like where to learn the basics online first? I'm using duolingo now!

My love explained and taught me Finnish locative cases with all their functions
It lasted for few days and it's finally over today. I envy his nerves for dealing with many of my "what the.." or "why" moments or following my whim of understanding grammatical structure before having any proper knowledge of the language itself. I know it's not the rightest thing to start learning a language this way, but I swear it made things easier for me. I am just weird maybe.
I understood many things but no way I remember much of it. It was for writing down purposes.
AFTER this and after I read few other things by myself (no way I'll bother him again), I plan to just read and try to translate random simple sentences and try to make connections with grammar stuff I have learnt already and to just get accustomed with the language.
Good luck to me
