optimistic on the outside, hot mess on the inside

    Friends!!!!! im freakin out.
I tried to sleep, I cant im just sitting here reading visa horror stories. and feeling shitty.
My boyfriend is suppose to come to see me next week. last week he was denied a travel visa
He was suprised because he was here in December 17 to visit his brother, this is before we met.
So apparently the consulate called him and told him that all his paperwork isokay, its just that some rule for getting into the states has changed and maybe to wait a couple weeks. but he told me yesterday that he is traveling to the embassy tomorrow to "get his visa" the thig is that he is quite a positive thinker, so he wont allow himself to feel stressed about it. he just thinks positive.... Me on the other hand is more realistic, I've read that once a visa is denied there is really nothing you can do about it unless your situation changes.
Im trying to be optimistic for him but on the inside i am already perparing for another denial.
i feel terrible for him. i dont want him to be embarassed or hurt. I hOPE this wont be the case but i just havent seen proof otherwise.
    SIGH

Thank you @paperplane! So he went, and was told that they are still waiting on the policy decision from USA and they made him ANOTHER appointment tomorrow! so the rollercoaster continues. I am not sure what the policy is. i know about the travel ban but that shouldnt affect him at leasti dont think it should.
      ahh, well.....

This kind of sounds suspicious to me, especially since you already had a suspicious encounter about the passport photo he sent you (which you talked about in your “Venting about relationship confusion”-Thread).
        For the following reasons:

        1. I read on your Venting thread, that your boyfriend holds a Spanish passport. With a Spanish passport, you don’t even need a visa, only an ESTA (visa-free travel authorization) to visit. (Unless he has previously been denied a visa or entry to the US).

        2. As far as I know, the consulate does not just call people to tell them the rules have changed. They usually send paperwork or don’t respond at all.

        3. Also, what rules could have possibly changed? The only visa-related change I’ve heard of is the travel ban. Spanish citizens are not affected by the travel ban. (Even if having dual citizenship of a country that is affected, holding another citizenship of an unaffected country exempts you from the travel ban)

What kind of visa is he even trying to obtain? I’m assuming the B2 visitor visa.
He will only need a B2, if he has lost the right to use ESTA or wants to stay longer than 90 days. If he wants to stay longer than 90 days, he will have a hard time proving his NON-immigration intent anyway.

Considering that passport-photo-uncertainty and now this unexplained visa-trouble, if I were in your place, I would definitely ask him more detailed questions about what’s going on.
Like what visa he is trying to get and why he is not using ESTA; what rule change are they talking about?

Some things just don’t add up to me right now, maybe because something is off, maybe because you’ve not given a whole lot of details.

          Thank you Caro1!
This visa situation is strange indeed and it still continues!
So last week after the third visit, they told him he needed to go to spain to get his visa, so i started questioning and got a little bit of clairty.
I was wrong, I thought the document he showed me was a passport, its not. He dosent have a spanish passport, He is a resident of spain, not a citizen. I looked again and its indeed a residence card..I feel bad for being so skeptical and missing that it wasnt even a passport.
He explained to me that he "thinks" that they told him to go to the spain embassy because he is a resident there, and just working and living in germany for a little over a year. I told him he should consider citizenship to spain or dual since this is such a hassle. i still dont understand this rule that has changed. but, to his defense, sometimes he just dosent know the correct word in english and is probably simplfying the situation. a part of me just wants to ask him to send me whatever paperwork he recieved so i can understand.
He is trying to get the visitor visa. just for the amount of time on his plane ticket, I asked if maybe the last time he was he if he overstayed his visit and he said no, because he had to come back and work and wasnt interested in staying longer anyway.
This morning he traveled to Madrid and is there now. Since he is already using his vacation days he will make an appointment at the embassy there and just stay with his friends/family until the interview.
I feel bad that he is going all of this for a visa, but it will highlight if there is a issue if he is denied again.
