You need to tell him, yes you may be afraid that he is not going to talk to you; but you owe him the truth. The longer you wait, the worse it is going to be and doing it in person is not a great idea because you are then trapping him and making the situation worse.

Telling him sooner is better than later the longer you put it off the more hurt he is going to be. Tell him why you did it and why you're coming clean and then the ball is in his court. If he decides he needs space then you need to give it to him.
