    Breaking the american, traditional proposal

    Hi Everyone,
Both my SO and I live in the US, most people who are getting engaged around us always have the guy getting the girl a ring, and then you are engaged. My SO suggested that we swap engagement presents (even though it will be a surprise for me, I guess I will have to plan way ahead). A friend of his recently bought her new fiance an IRA for his engagement present, a very practical idea but not super romantic. Did anyone else get their SO a present besides a ring or is planning to? I need some ideas,

I didn't buy him anything, I did make us some matching friendship bracelets though- he still wears his, mine snapped unfortunately There are some really nice hand-made bangles or dog-tags on etsy which can be engraved with pretty much anything, like co-ordinates of a place special to you, or a quote.

My SO got me a ring with his birthstone on it and I got him a necklace off of etsy with my name engraved in it and my birthstone on it. And after he proposed, I also made a little speech while giving him the necklace. I liked it because it felt like we were both proposing to each other and making the decision together.
