Hi,
After being together for so long without being married, I don't think you should place emphasis on the ring. However, I think you should save for a wedding and skip the engagement process. If buying a ring is a cost concern, why not save for wedding bands and other wedding costs instead? I know you feel pressured to get engage because everyone is married or getting there, but try to be practical. Saying you are engage without a ring wouldn't make much difference to your friends; they'd probably find the situation more comical.
I suggest saving for wedding bands and have a small ceremony in a time frame that is suitable for you both.
