From personal experience, I find Lenovos to be magnificent. I have a Lenovo G580 that is working superb for several months now, with Windows 7 on it. Don't forget that regardless of your decision, the OS matters a whole lot for the device's performance. Buying a licensed windows instead of getting a cracked one will improve performance significantly. I personally bought this laptop to use both for college and gaming.

I looked on Consumer Reports for the best laptops and took some screen shots. I sorted them by "overall score" and I included Apples. Considering everyone tends to be a bit bias when talking about their preferred laptop makers, I figured this might be helpful.
