    Broken Laptop screen

Well just grumbled about this over in the vets section but last night my SO broke my laptop screen. I thought it would be an easy replacement because when I first got my last laptop the screen broke. It was still under warranty and I sent it in and they sent it back brand new screen no prob. But I just did a bit of research and most places say that if your screen breaks its just better to buy a new laptop because it costs so much to get a new one. Truth to this? My freaking laptop is only 2 years old and I spent way more than I wanted to on it (since my brother convinced me to get HDMI port, bigger screen, faster processer, etc etc).

Anything computer related easily costs twice here as it would in the USA. Im going to Colorado in January and could potentially buy a computer in the USA and pick it up when I go up there. That wouldnt be until January so we would have to share my SOs shitty computer until then. But saving $500 might be worth it.

Annnyyyways... someone tell me my poor computer can be saved!!!

Look into repairs before you wave it off. See if you can get an estimate from someone. Sometimes it's an easy fix, and sometimes it's not-- it depends on what happened to your screen and how much work needs to be done to fix it.

That aside, if you don't need your laptop to be super fancy, I'd just share your SO's laptop until you can go to the US. January isn't that far away, and I'm sure you could find a clearance deal from the post-Christmas chaos.

Broken LCD screens aren't quick, cheap fixes, it'll be minimally $400 I think, could be as much as $900, depending on the problem. They usually aren't worth it, to be honest. Could you transfer some money home and beg, I mean ask, someone to find you something on Black Friday, that would be the day to get the best deal on a new one. Also, if you don't want to share a computer, you could get an external monitor for now, they are pretty cheap (at least here) these days.

I second getting an external monitor. They are pretty cheap and then you can still use your laptop (it just won't be as mobile now).

I'd suggest you look around into local repairs. Ask around and you might be able to get it fixed reasonably. My boy recently got his screen replaced and it cost him £50.

            Thanks for the replies guys!

I just talked to my SO and he says he can get a new screen for $250, which is a lot of money but honestly a lot less than I expected. Hes going to see if a friend of his can install it for free (slash) a few beers. If they cant I dont think the labor will cost too much to get it installed. Parts are expensive here, but labor is hella cheap.

$250 is certainly less than a new computer would cost me. Heres to hoping thats all it needs!
