Call and text your SO for free ! Yes, it's possible !

What do you think about my title ? Looks pretty much as if I was trying to sell you something, but not at all

What you need, is a smartphone. The iPhone would be the best, then an Android... Unfortunately, for the ones who have a BlackBerry, it's more complicated at the moment.

First solution, which works with all the smartphones, texting for free :
What do you need ? The application called "What's app" compatible between iPhone, Android and Blackberry (don't know about Windows and Symbian).

Then, the most interesting solution, calling for free :
You have two possibilities, depending on which phones you both have.
    - The application "Viber", but it only works between iPhone.
    https://www.viber.com/

    - The application "Tango", works between iPhone and Android systems, and you have video calling as well !!!

As my SO will have a BlackBerry, I checked if those 2 apps are going to make something for BlackBerrys, apparently, Viber is working on it (March)

I hope it can help some of you !

Really? International calls and texts as well? And does it matter what phone company you use?

Yes, free, because everything pas through Wi-Fi or 3G... you just need to both have the application.

Man, I wish we could do that! My SO has such an old phone that he doesn't have any of those technologies, but I think that's AWESOME.

Yes, but either of those phones aren't cheap in Australia, and it would require paying for a more expensive phone plan, etc in our case. But it's great for people who have the means. ^^

Great suggestions! They are definitely alternatives to expensive calling, but people should take note that unless you have an unlimited data plan on your mobile, data charges can get quite steep.

You don't NEED unlimited data, it's just a "bonus"
You can use it with wireless, and, with 250Mo or 500Mo of data per month, you can already do a lot... With 1Go, no worries
Of course, then the data depends on how long you spend... but for long conversation, I recommend to use the wireless, not only to save your data allowance, but because of the quality of the signal

And I forgot, with BlackBerry, you have Skype, but it's not as good as Viber, in my opinion

In my country, you have the iPhone for free with a contract that costs around 40 dollars a month, with unlimited data... I know it's kind of the same in France and in the UK, but don't know about USA...
So 40 dollars for a month to call her as much as I want, it's not overpriced in my opinion....

Not to mention data can be expensive if not on a plan. I have a htc desire (which I love) but I just have a prepaid sim so it costs me an arm and a leg to use 3g, cheaper to call and if I'm around wifi I have my laptop anyway.

It's a cool idea if you both have a good data plan and already had a smartphone.

i actually use crunch SMS for my Blackberry, I think it works through your data plan as well (since data plans are required anyhoo) I obviously just use the unlimited data plan. Only thing is, smartphones in Mexico are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay expensive. so he doesnt have one. And I still have to wait for my weekly phonecall. lol
