Between the cushions of the couch!! I feel like that'd be a good "clue #1".

Or under a cushion, preferably in his favorite spot to sit.

Inside a pillowcase also works. Penn did that to me once. Put it under the pillow so the bump is less obvious.

ETA: Since it has to be done the day before, scrap the pillow. How about in a window well, since you said you live in a basement apartment? Wrap the book and clue in a plastic bag so they won't get wet.

Hmmm perhaps somewhere that connects with what the book is about...Or somewhere sentimental that he would only know about when thinking about your relationship. Maybe under a bench outside his job or in a tree. Maybe a dollar book store or somewhere and hide it in the magazine rack. In his coat perhaps. I mean you could give him the first book as a starter clue that way you only have to hide one more. Or perhaps behind the tv or the mirror
