Not direct flights

I just posted about how I found a very cheap way to fly all the way from Mexico to Russia, and I was just wondered before I buy the tickets if anyone has done what I am about to do, let me explain

I am going to buy tickets from different airlines and not in the same page, so if one of the flights is delayed I am not going to be able to take my next plane. In total I am going to make to stops, one in USA and other one in the UK and then flight straight to Russia.
I am handling this by making a one day stop in USA and another one day stop in the UK, it's a good idea for me, because I have relatives in the airport cities where I am going to make the stop and therefore It' will give a day with them

Has anyone does this or has heard a bad experience with this "way of travel"? Am I being to risky?

This looks like a very old topic.
How did it go? Do you have any advice for people who are considering the same?

Did you have to take care of additonal Visa?
I can't image you are allowed to leave the airport if you don't have the right Visa.
