So I just returned from my surprise visit to New Orleans last week. My SO had NO idea I was going to surprise him. I told him I was going to LA and made up all these fake plans. I actually had a lay over in LA, so I turned on my "location" setting when I was at LAX and messaged him on Facebook to make it even more believable. For those of y'all who may be interested, I had his reaction filmed..

I planned this ~2 weeks in advance with his sister so it was very last minute planning on my part but everything worked out just fine

It would be harder for me due to the cost of Trans-Atlantic flights and the fact if he didn't know he'd be at work the entire time!

Nope it wasn't too expensive. I booked my flight relatively late but it was ~$500.

Ohh yeah it's definitely harder if you have to travel overseas!
It was difficult to plan things since my SO had no idea and he also had work/school.. but we did the best we could.
