For about 7 months my SO and I have communicated in spoken English. We did this because we knew he was coming here and he wanted to practice while he was in the USA. But now that I'm moving down to his country we are switching to Spanish. I'm fluent but it's so hard to switch! I can express myself so much better in English. Anyone who has tried to learn a language knows how hard it is to speak the foreign language when you know you can communicate perfectly well in your native tongue.
So we'll see how it goes. I gotta practice though for real. It's been tooooo long. Anyone else have to switch their languages??
My current relationship is mostly in English with a bit of French and Bambara mixed in. But with my ex-boyfriend it was ALL French. Even though I'm fluent, I definitely know the frustration of trying to express yourself in the best way in another language.
If I were you, I'd try to use Spanish as much as possible. But if you guys got into an argument or if you really felt like you couldn't get it across in Spanish, I would switch into English. Nothing wrong with mixing them all together!
I'm fluent in English and Mandarin, but have the tendency to mix the languages. /: I'm more comfortable with English and won't have to switch when I go to the US. But I'm very self conscious of my accent and bad grammar.
My boyfriend on the other hand has to learn Mandarin for summer class and wants me to speak it more often with him. I don't like it because he doesn't understand me as well that way, but I'll try. He likes that I speak English with Chinese grammar, says it makes it easier for him to learn the language. Hmm.
I agree it can be tough. My SO and I communicate solely in Spanish and after visiting him for a week, I'm now back in the US and actually having a little trouble switching back to English! What makes it even more complicated is that I tend to use Italian when communicating with my family, so in a day I can switch between 3 languages. Sometimes it's hard to keep everything straight and I tend to mix the languages.
